The City of Peterborough engaged Associated Engineering to initiate a replacement program for streetlights and poles based on their individual condition.

The City also wanted to create an accurate photo inventory of all their city-owned poles.

Our role was to organize and conduct all of the inspections, and develop a database for the inspections. To help facilitate efficient inspections, field staff made use of Panasonic ToughPad tablets with database and mapping software installed on them. The tablet’s ability to link the photos to the database directly in the field allow the inspectors to accurately and efficiently associate imagery to each pole inspected. Additionally the GPS capabilities on the tablets allowed for the addition of new poles and verification of existing poles within the GIS and linked database.

Project Highlights

Daylight inspections included complete condition assessments of all city owned poles (3000+). In addition, inspection of 5000+ lights were reviewed for broken sensors and to confirm they were operating properly and within established guidelines. A challenge the team faced was the short timeline, as daytime inspections needed to be completed by the end of the summer season. Detailed structural inspections were also carried out for all poles deemed to be in poor condition. Information collected from the inspection, along with base asset information, was then used for risk assessment and prioritization and to develop an inspection and replacement program.
