The City of Powell River’s Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) established the need to replace three compliance-ridden wastewater treatment facilities with a new treatment facility
Associated Engineering was retained to design the new Consolidated Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWWTP).
Although the public recognized that a state-of-the-art treatment system would safeguard human health and the marine environment, some residents were alarmed that the new facility would be located in their neighbourhood.
Public engagement made it clear that the design needed to minimize the impact of the new facility on the community and integrate the facility to the natural environment.
Associated Engineering’s design met these objectives in the following ways:
- Integrating the facility into the natural environment, and preserving existing heritage trees and the network of trails in the undeveloped waterfront lands.
- Minimizing the facility footprint and using green roofs on buildings/structures to soften the “industrial” look.
- Containing potential sources of odour and providing state-of-the-art odour treatment
Project Highlights
An attractive process building contains the headworks (screening, degritting), sludge thickening and biosolids dewatering. Biological treatment is a compact, modular, activated sludge system with a step feed system for wet weather. A common-wall integrated bioreactor complex contains four modular bioreactors / integrated secondary clarifiers, two aerobic digesters, and ultraviolet effluent disinfection in the central gallery housing process equipment and piping. An advanced three-stage odour control system will treat all of the potentially foul air from the process building.
