The City of Surrey retained Associated Engineering with subconsultants Perkins + Will Architect, space2place, Thurber Engineering, and EOS Lightmedia to complete the preliminary and detailed design, as well as construction services for the Pioneer Bridge crossing of Highway 99.
Due to the highly visible location and importance of this crossing, the City’s stated design criteria was for a showcase structure that would be viewed as a gateway to the City for traffic entering Surrey from the United States. Associated Engineering developed a deck arch bridge concept that utilized the natural topography of the site, maintaining an efficient structural form, while providing an elegant crossing of the highway.
In addition to the bridge, approach pathways and landscaping, the design also included an aesthetic lighting design that has been recognized by the City of Surrey’s Arts Group as a public art display.
