The City of Calgary identified the need for additional storage space for their newly acquired light rail vehicles.
These vehicles are planned to go into service on the new West leg of Calgary Transit’s Light Rapid Transit System in January 2013, a mission-critical deadline. Transportation Infrastructure, a division of The City of Calgary, selected Associated Engineering to act as Prime Consultant to a team providing architectural and engineering consulting services for the design and contract administration of the second phase of the Oliver Bowen Maintenance Facility.

additional building space
$10mil
capital cost
This Phase 2 extension provides approximately 5,330 square metres of additional building space on the east side of the existing building, and makes provision for construction of four additional rail tracks to provide storage and running repair maintenance for 48 light rail vehicles. With an estimated capital cost of $10 million, the structure was designed to conform to the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification. The scope for this project included preliminary and detailed design, preparation of tender documents, and contract administration of the building, traction power, rail signals, and communications system, and review of track design for Calgary Transit construction.
Phase 2 project elements includes a storage building complete with electrical, mechanical, and lighting systems, security cameras, public address system, underground utilities, grounding and bonding of all project infrastructure, four new storage tracks to accommodate 48 light rail vehicles, eight track turn-outs, rail-switch heaters, a light rail overhead catenary system to feed power to vehicles, and a light rail power distribution system.
