As engineer for the City of Burnaby’s bridge management program, Associated Engineering identified the Lake City Overhead Bridge for significant rehabilitation, seismic assessment and retrofit.
This four lane, four-span box girder bridge carries Gaglardi Way and provides access to Burnaby Mountain and Simon Fraser University. The bridge was constructed in 1965, prior to modern seismic provision. The bridge deck and pier caps had become significantly deteriorated.
The City retained Associated Engineering to conduct a full structural inspection; study the potential seismic retrofit strategies; conduct detailed design of the serviceability and seismic retrofit; prepare tender documents; provide contract administration services; and provide construction inspection services.

Project Highlights
Associated Engineering carried out a detailed condition survey of the concrete deck and selected substructure components, and developed a repair strategy that would eliminate all of the existing deck joints. The parallel seismic retrofit study suggested that this work could be effectively incorporated as part of the seismic retrofit design. The result was a seismic retrofit in conjunction with a deck and pier rehabilitation.
