Bridge Rehabilitation & Retrofit

Pedestrian Bridges

The City of Calgary retained Associated Engineering to rehabilitate the existing wooden deck on the John Hextall (Shouldice) Bridge.

The bridge is a registered-historic three-span steel through‑truss structure, originally built in 1910, which previously carried streetcars and road traffic. Since 1986, it has served as a pedestrian bridge carrying the Bow River Pathway over the Bow River.

Throughout the project stages, significant scope was added including:

  • Removal of all existing deck layers (timber, asphalt, and steel deck)
  • Replacement of ~80% of deck stringers
  • Placement of new concrete deck, approach slabs, and deck joints
  • Replacement of bridge bicycle barrier & retrofit of cantilever walkway
  • Lead containment & recoating of superstructure steel
  • Structural rehabilitation of abutment seats and pier caps
  • Aesthetic rehabilitation of abutment walls, pier caps, and abutment staircases
  • Replacement & upgrade of bridge lighting system
  • Environmental containment of the works listed above
