The Kelowna United Football Club retained Associated Engineering for civil design, electrical design, and project management services for the installation of a new indoor soccer facility.
The facility consists of a new artificial turf field, covered by an inflatable dome and run by a mechanical system.
The Club had decided years earlier on the general size and shape of the indoor facility. The challenge was finding a suitable location within the City of Kelowna. In the end, the Club facility was installed at the City’s Mission Sports Complex.

Project Highlights
The site challenges were extensive, including a wetland, a high water table, and high public visibility. The civil works included extensive geotechnical work, including dewatering and subsequent excavation and replacement with acceptable base material. A concrete grade beam, footing conduits, and a drainage system were constructed to specification. As the Club wanted the option of removing the dome in the summer, the turf and field design were built for outdoor use, ultimately requiring field crowning and sub-surface drains to manage water removal during major storm events. The design specified 63 mm artificial turf.
Associated Engineering was responsible for obtaining all the necessary permits, including making the case for a fire sprinkler waiver for an unsupported arena structure. The project was constructed on time, on schedule and below budget for opening in November 2013.
