The project was undertaken to improve transportation efficiencies on the Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (TCWR), while ensuring a high level of safety and no additional risk to winter road operators and drivers.
NOR•EX Engineering provided ice engineering design, ice loading tables, and quality assurance program for improved transportation up the TCWR to resupply three diamond mines north of Yellowknife. The project team provided the ice engineering design and overall quality assurance programs.
The enhancements saved the client 116 fewer truckloads in 2014; achieved a 5% increase in truck payload capacity until the Winter Road was operating at maximum capacity (100% Super B Gross Vehicle Weight); and provided an operational cost savings in excess of $600,000/year moving forward.
