Highway 40 is a primary highway in mountainous terrain in southwestern Alberta and provides access to Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, Kananaskis Village, Nakiska Mountain Resort, and many other tourist and recreational facilities.
It also encompasses the Highwood Pass which is the highest paved pass in Canada. In June 2013, heavy rainfall caused severe erosion.
A 55 kilometre long stretch of highway, from Highwood House to the Peter Lougheed Park entrance, saw a significant amount of damage at nearly 120 different sites. Associated was awarded the Highway 40:10 project to evaluate the extent of damage, and to design and administer the contract(s) to reconstruct the highway where needed.
