The Yellowknife Education District No.1 retained Associated Environmental to conduct a hazardous building material assessment of six schools, two accessory buildings, and one apartment building.
The District was required to identify any hazardous building materials at the buildings and record the liability of such materials for financial purposes. These materials were asbestos-containing materials, lead-based paint, polychlorinated biphenyls, mercury, ozone-depleting substances, and urea formaldehyde foam insulation.

Project Highlights
An assessment of above ground storage tanks and an inventory of fuels, chemicals, and cleaners on site was completed. The scope of the assessment included a room-by-room intrusive investigation to identify any hazardous materials in applicable architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil applications. The objective of the assessment was to determine the presence and extent of hazardous materials at the buildings in order to develop health and safety protocols for workers when conducting renovations and operation and maintenance activities.
With the assessment completed, Associated is currently acting as Project Manager for communication to staff, students and the public, for training of maintenance staff on asbestos awareness, and for supervision of abatement activities.
