In collaboration with SFU and the SFU Community Trust, the Corix Biomass Energy Centre is a new biomass energy plant located on the south end of the campus.

The Central Energy Plant provides cost-effective, low-carbon energy to the SFU Burnaby Campus and the surrounding UniverCity community. Biomass was selected as the preferred source of energy to divert wood waste from landfills and help the City of Burnaby achieve its municipal greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Associated acted as the Structural Engineer of Record for the Corix Biomass Energy Centre. The Centre consisted of the Central Energy Plant, Fuel Bin, and Conveyor Pit Building. Pre-Engineered Steel Structures were chosen as the preferred system for the superstructure for economy and clear span distances. The substructure consisted of concrete walls, concrete pilasters, suspended mezzanine slabs and a raft slab foundation.

Associated also provided an Environmental Assessment and Environmental Management Plan to protect the local environment.

Project Highlights

Outside of the Corix Biomass Energy Centre, Associated provided design and construction services for a shallow retaining wall. Associated conceptually designed the future education centre adjacent to the Corix Biomass Energy Centre.

Associated also acted as the Civil Engineer of Record and Electrical Power Supply Specialist for the Corix Biomass Energy Centre. The scope included design and construction services for civil site grading, civil site services, and electrical site services.

The Environmental Management Plan included an erosion and sediment control plan, emergency spill response, waste management and air quality mitigation, and a invasive species management plan. A restoration of 6m+ of riparian buffer provided a net benefit to riparian function of the project area.
