The Calgary Zoo was inundated with water during the June 2013 flooding in Calgary, AB.
Following the flood event, Associated was selected as part of a team to develop a flood protection plan for St. George’s Island, where the zoo is located. To inform the design of flood protection infrastructure for the zoo, the project team completed groundwater monitoring, sampling, and numerical modelling. Groundwater and surface water quality samples provided key information to understand surface groundwater interactions.
Groundwater quality sampling helped to identify characteristics of groundwater aquifers flowing into the island. Associated’s contribution and modelling results helped determine the effectiveness of various engineering solutions and to define what would be required to protect the zoo from future flood events.
