Bridge Rehabilitation & Retrofit

For almost 100 years, two steel truss bridges served as a main transportation route to the Town of Battleford. Today, the historic structures provide access to Finlayson Island for vehicles and pedestrians.

In 2003, the Town of Battleford took ownership of the bridges from the province and retained Associated Engineering to assist with monitoring and maintaining the aging structure. In 2018, Associated Engineering developed a Ten-Year Management Plan that provided the basis for federal grants.

A new longer jump span was designed and the eroded slope was reshaped and armoured. Associated Engineering was able to provide a rehabilitation design accounting for the tight timeline restrictions of the funding, as well as an innovative approach to constructability to address the restricted access of the jump span, to allow the continuing use of this community link. With the load restriction on the south bridge material weight and equipment sizes were carefully selected. The limiting elements on the south bridge were strengthened as part of the rehabilitation to allow more construction equipment and materials to cross the structure.

The cost-effective, environmentally sustainable rehabilitation restores the bridges for Battleford for decades to come.
