This past Sunday night was another successful evening for Associated Engineering at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta Showcase Awards Gala, as we took home one Award of Excellence and two Awards of Merit! The CEA has recognized excellence in consulting engineering in Alberta and throughout the world at this event since 1996. This year, project awards were given for Excellence and Merit in thirteen categories.
Calgary Zoo Flood Mitigation Project
Award of Excellence (Water Resources) and Award of Merit (Project Management)
The 2013 flood caused $50 million in damage to the Calgary Zoo. Protecting the Zoo’s future on St. George’s Island was a significant challenge, with the project team working to understand both the overland and underground mitigation needs in a 1:100 year flood. An unconventional mitigation system was chosen, using a sheet pile cofferdam wall, watertight barrier and pumping system. The project was completed in parallel with many others in the tight confines of the island, with the team working to mitigate impacts to communities and Zoo operations, while finishing in time for the pandas to arrive.
NU Girder Bridge Design and Detailing Manual
Award of Merit (Studies, Software and Special Services)
The NU Girder Bridge Design and Detailing Manual is a much-needed resource for Alberta Transportation and consultants across the province. It encourages consistency in designs and detailing, increasing competitiveness and reliability in NU Girder bridge designs. It also acts as a training tool for consultants by providing a comprehensive design resource, including tools for preliminary and detailed design, as well as new Typical Details drawings. Embraced by fabricators, the manual provides value to the bridge industry, not only helping consultants complete safe, consistent and efficient designs; but also creating NU Girder bridge designs that will be more economical to fabricate.
